ABC Me Flashcards:
History, Literacy, Inspiration
Leilani Brooks is a mom and teacher. While looking for ways to teach her children about their history and culture, she discovered that there weren’t enough resources for teaching African American history to young children. After purchasing a set of flashcards depicting American Presidents and seeing our 44th President, Barack Obama represented, Leilani was inspired. She called long time friend, educator and historian, Stevi Meredith. Brooks told Meredith she had an idea to make flashcards about African American accomplishments and culture. After some brainstorming, the two came up with what is now ABC Me Flashcards: The African American Edition.
“I wanted not only my children, but all African American children to know that they are not defined by the images they see in the media. They come from a long line of leaders and rule changers that broke through and are still breakiing through barriers,” says Brooks.
Designed to be used in a myriad of ways, ABC Me Flashcards are illustrated in vibrant colors with easy to understand wording on the back. They begin with the alphabet but A isn’t for apple. This time, A is for Africa. And so from A to Z or from Africa to Zora Neal Hurston, younger children can learn their ABC’s and older children can use the same cards to learn about their history. Meredith reminds us that, “African American history is AMERICAN history.”
Both Meredith and Brooks agree that it’s time we made sure all children were inspired to do great things. And what better way than to give them a bridge to literacy so they will be able to read and be inspired to do. ABC Me Flashcards make great gifts for birthdays and baby showers.
Leilani Brooks received her Bachelor's degree from UCLA with a focus on Artsbridge education. She serves as the Dean of Students at an Elementary School in California. Her greatest role, to date, is that of being a wife to her absolute best friend and mother to two amazing children who drive her to leave them a better world, a JUST world, full of hope and opportunity.
Stevi Meredith is a director, writer, teacher and coach. Stevi has a Certificate and Associate Degree in Early Childhood Development. After teaching pre-school for several years, Stevi understood the need to build self-esteem and identity through images. After leaving the early childhood arena, Stevi went on to teach at a performing arts high school. Her approach to building a whole person through the arts has empowered many of her students to reach their dreams. Stevi lives in Long Beach, California with her family and enjoys writing, cooking and long walks on the beach.
